Sustainability at Ennis Golf Club

Protecting our course, enhancing nature, for generations to come.

Ennis Golf Club earns GEO Certified® status

Ennis Golf Club is proud to announce that it has achieved GEO Certified®, the internationally recognised standard for sustainable golf. The certification recognises the club’s practical work across nature, resources and community, together with its commitment to climate action and continual improvement.

The award follows a comprehensive review of how the club manages its course and clubhouse, including biodiversity, water, energy, waste, responsible purchasing, community links and long-term planning. It also reflects the shared effort of members, volunteers, course staff, clubhouse staff and management.

GEO Certified is independently assured by GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, the international not-for-profit organisation that helps golf facilities evaluate, improve and credibly communicate their sustainability performance.

“This certification is an important milestone for Ennis Golf Club, but it is not the finishing line. It recognises the many practical improvements already made and gives us a clear framework for continuing to protect our course, reduce our environmental footprint and serve our members and the wider community. We are especially proud that this has been a club-wide effort.”
President, Ennis Golf Club

Sustainability in action

AREA
SELECTED ACTIONS
Nature
The club is treating the course as an important local habitat as well as a place to play golf. Actions include designated wildflower and long-grass areas, habitat piles for insects and wildlife, more sensitive management of limestone outcrops, and a structured approach to biodiversity, tree and woodland management, nutrient use and integrated pest management.
Resources
A 50.75 kWp solar photovoltaic system comprising 114 panels is helping to reduce purchased electricity and associated emissions. This is supported by LED lighting, energy monitoring, water-management planning, improved waste segregation and a sustainable procurement approach.
Climate action
The club has set out a phased roadmap for further improvement, including fabric and heating-control upgrades, reducing dependence on kerosene, improving heat-pump readiness and exploring lower-carbon course machinery, electric-vehicle charging and robotic mowing where practical.
Community
Ennis Golf Club is a member-led community organisation that welcomes visitors, supports junior and senior golf, works with local groups and businesses, and uses education, signage and member engagement to make sustainability part of everyday club life.

A commitment to keep improving

Certification confirms that Ennis Golf Club meets GEO’s criteria at the time of assessment; it also requires the club to maintain momentum. The club will continue to measure performance, review priorities and involve members and staff as new projects are developed.

For Ennis Golf Club, sustainability is about protecting the character and playing quality of the course while using resources wisely, supporting people and planning responsibly for the future.
